Speed Bumps

“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.”‘ – Rom 8:28

The past few months have proven to be very very hard on my heart.  I am drained.  Emotionally, physically, and mentally drained.  This path I have chosen to take in life, although it is very rewarding, it is not an easy one and the sacrifices I have had to make and the speed bumps that I have hit along the way have been rather large these days.  In fact, they are huge, and this path...it is a very difficult one.  I love taking care of children.  I love the people I work with.  I love my life.  But...I work way more than I will even begin to explain, and right now I have way more on my plate than I feel anyone should.  My body is tired.  And my heart...it hurts.

"Faith is what makes life bearable, with all its tragedies and ambiguities and sudden, startling joys." Madeleine L'Engle

My day this month begins very early and ends very late.  I have one hour to eat, exercise, and spend time with my husband.  Like I said, I am drained! However, its not the working that bothers me, not even a little bit, I can deal with the physical exhaustion and I don't mind working hard, I actually like to work my tail off, it is where my ADD fits in the best, or should I say the chipmunk on speed in me.  But I am so tired.   Chronic fatigue?  Yes, most definitely.  I am used to it though, the physical exhaustion that is.  The emotional exhaustion though....not so much.  The past few months have taken a toll on my emotional well-being and stretched my heart out to the max.  Thank God for an understanding husband, to say the least!  Sure don't know what I would do without him these days.

No trial has come to you but what is human. God is faithful and will not let you be tried beyond your strength; but with the trial he will also provide a way out, so that you may be able to bear it.
1 Corinthians 10:13

I find it to be no coincidence, with all that is going on in my life right now, that this past weekend was Easter.  Thank you God, for a day to remember what is truly important in life.  God does nothing by mistake.  Everything we face in life has some meaning, some hidden purpose.  I could question God all day long about things that happen in my life.  But I don't.  These things, or these speed bumps I should say, have molded me into the person I am today.  I am a better person because of the things that I have had to and are currently enduring.  These "bumps" help me, somehow someway, to see the whole picture that God is trying to paint.  I have become a more sympathetic and caring person because of it and I am able to help others in ways that I never thought I would be able to.  They have also helped me to realize that I have the best support system, ie family and friends, in the whole universe, I am so blessed and so lucky to be surrounded by such caring people.

"I believe that everything happens for a reason. People change so that you can learn to let go, things go wrong so that you learn to appreciate them when they're right.  And sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together." - Marilyn Monroe

One of my favorite sayings in the whole wide world is, "If God brings you to it, He'll get you through it."  It's soooo true.  I don't know what I would do without my faith.  I 'd be one lost puppy that's for sure!  There are no mistakes in life, everything is a blessing in disguise, it is just up to you to find it!

What we might think of as speed bumps in our life’s road are usually only God’s way of slowing us down enough to get our attention. Conover Swofford.

I challenge you to take the good out of the bad, to see the true messages behind the speed bumps in your life, count your blessings and cherish loved ones.  And always always always remember, be kind to those you encounter, for somewhere out there, there is always someone else fighting a harder battle.

Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around. ~Leo Buscaglia

Mommy Calls

Part of being a pediatrician is being on call.  As a pediatric resident, part of my training is to take mommy calls.  What are mommy calls you ask?  Well, let me tell you about mommy calls.  Mommy calls are supposed to be calls taken by us after hours for emergencies.  This however is not always the case.  I have gotten calls after midnight from parents wondering what time their appointment is at the clinic, wondering who their doctor is, wondering if I have a copy of their child's immunizations, and many many calls about constipation at 3 o'clock in the morning.  I do get some emergency calls and I love being able to help in those cases, but I have to admit some of my favorite mommy calls are the non-emergent ones.  Why you ask?  Well....let me humor you just a little...

I received a call from a mom at midnight one night asking me for help because she said her kid started talking and now he wont stop.  Now, I am only human.  I cannot, for it is impossible to address this without bursting in laughter.  After we both laugh about the silly nature of this call, I tell the mom to give the child a little bit of benadryl, for it may be a medication side effect from a med the child is currently taking, and try to get some rest.  Three hours later the mom calls me back frantic because she said the child is "worse." Worse?  How is he worse?  Well, now the child is jumping off the walls and talking non-stop.  Uh-oh.  In a small percentage of kids benadryl has the opposite effect on kids and actually makes the hyper instead of calming them down.  Poor mom.  I bet she didn't get any rest that night!

You can learn many things from children.  How much patience you have, for instance.  ~Franklin P. Jones

Another favorite call I got, well, I will just let the page I received through my pager explain....

Dear Mommies,
For the most part I love your calls and I love being able to help/calm you, minus the ones about constipation at 3 0'clock in the morning.  I especially love the silly ones when we both have a sense of humor and can laugh at the matter at hand.

He WILL Stand by Me

Oh why you look so sad
The tears are in your eyes
Come on and come to me now
Don’t be ashamed to cry
Let me see you through
Cause I’ve seen the dark side too

When the night falls on you
You don't know what to do
Nothing you confess
Could make me love you less

I’ll stand by you
I’ll stand by you
Won’t let nobody hurt you
I’ll stand by you

So if you're mad get mad
Don’t hold it all inside
Come on and talk to me now
Hey, what you got to hide
I get angry too
Well I’m a lot like you

When you're standing at the crossroads
And don't know which path to choose
Let me come along
Cause even if you're wrong

I’ll stand by you
I’ll stand by you
Won’t let nobody hurt you
I’ll stand by you
Take me in into you darkest hour
And I’ll never desert you
I’ll stand by you

And when, when the night falls on you, baby
You feeling all alone
You won't be on your own

I’ll stand by you
I’ll stand by you
Won’t let nobody hurt you
I’ll stand by you
Take me in into you darkest hour
And I’ll never desert you
I’ll stand by you

Oh I’ll stand by you
I’ll stand by you

Bieber Fever

I think I have caught the bug, yes most definitely think so.  Pretty sure I have Bieber Fever after watching Never Say Never.  What an awesome movie about a young adult who never gives up and uses social networking to make it to the top.  Justin Bieber is pretty ridiculously talented to begin with, but his story of his road to fame is touching to say the least.  I definitely used the excuse to take my favorite little girl I invited my favorite little girl to go with me, and when I asked her if she like the movie, her response was, in the cutest little valley girl voice you can do, "Oh my gosh, I LOVED it!"

Take your kids, friends, family, anyone who will go with you, to see Justin Bieber.  It will inspire them, and you too!  Imagine this world if we all lived by the philosophy, "Never Say Never," when it came to reaching our dreams.  What an incredible world we would live in!
